qmail

• qmail is a mail transport agent (MTA)

• Users interact with a mail user agent (MUA)

  • The MUA hands off the mail to the MTA

  • The MTA figures out where the mail should go

  • If its needs to be delivered over the network, the MTA takes care of that

    • It might need to try the delivery several times

• The MTA also receives mail delivered from the network

  • These messages are handed to a mail delivery agent for delivery

• The MTA provides minimal MUA and MDA functions
