This is the version 4.6 of a2ps, a program to format an ASCII file for
printing in a postscript printer. As the copyright indicates, this
distribution can be freely redistributed.
Initial version was a shell program written by evan@csli (Evan
Kirshenbaum). It was very slow and contained many bugs. A new version
was written in C by Miguel SANTANA for improve speed execution and
portability. Many new features and improvements have been added since
this first version. Many contributions (changes, fixes, ideas) were
done by a2ps users in order to improve it. From the latest known
version from M. Santana (4.3), Emmanuel Briot implemented bold faces
for keywords in ada, c and c++. Starting from this point, remodeling
completely the style description and handling for the various
languages, E. Briot and A. Demaille built this version, fully
compatible with version 4.3.
Some notes on the distribution:
Most of the work for the installation is done by ./configure.
See INSTALL for instructions.
Some choices are to make, and to give to ./configure
--disable-A4
if you want US letter as standard sheet
--disable-ISOLatin1
if you want only ASCII as default
--disable_auto
if you don't want a2ps to guess the style sheet to
use by default. Its guess is based on file suffix.
If disable, default is to print is plain style
--enable-print-default
if you want that default output is to printer
instead of stdout
--enable-1sided=OPT
OPT is the option to give the the print service
to get single sided prints
--enable-2sided=OPT
Same as previous, but for double sided prints. This option
is required if you expect a2ps to have double-sided
capabilities. Here, I use
--enable-2sided=-odouble
--disable-2-sided
if you don't want that default behaviour is to print
double-sided
a2ps has been successfully ported to Solaris, SunOS, Linux, HP-UX.
It is even used as a filter for print services.
a2ps *had* been successfully MSDOS.
Now it's up to you to tell us whether it is still portable :)
The a2ps distribution consists of the following files:
