A maildir is a directory with at least three subdirectories
tmp, new, cur
To deliver to a maildir, the MDA first tries to write the message to tmp
In a file with a unique name (time, pid, hostname)
It then moves the message to new
Then it reports success
Old messages in tmp can be assumed to be abortions
They can be cleaned up
The MUA can move messages from new to cur to indicate that they have been read
It can change the names to add annotations
Or it can put them into other subdirectories
