lpd

• It was too hard to configure

• Too many options for things I didn't want

• Lack of options for things I did want

• And it is too complicated and insecure

• Also a performance problem:

• lpd is responsible for converting input files to the format preferable to the printer

• So suppose I do lpr blah.ps

• lpd sees that the file is in the wrong format

• It converts the file to PCL

• Meanwhile the printer is standing idle

• Then it sends the file to the printer

• Meanwhile lpd is standing idle

• PostScript files take twice as long to print as they should!
