Git can calculate the differences between each commit and the next one

And then it can try to apply the same changes to the correct commit

Usually there are no conflicts and the whole thing is automatic

Then it moves the tag for you

(If there were any conflicts, it would pause in the middle to let you resolve them, then continue)
