It is a revision control system
You have a repository ("repo"), which contains some files and directories
At any time, you can checkpoint (commit) the current state of the repository
You can easily recover the state at any commit
You can easily display differences between commits from different times
Many people can commit changes to the same repository
It's as easy as possible to resolve conflicting simultaneous changes
It stores the complete history of who changed what and when and why
