There was clearly a lot of interest in x86 ports of Unix

A free clone sometime in the early 1990s seems inevitable

(In hindsight, anyway)

The project is not technically difficult

The API and overall model are already designed

FSF had released most of the necessary supporting tools

(Compiler, shell, etc.)

A lone dweeb could probably make a decent start over the weekend...
