Here's another tail variation I liked better
I use Dan Bernstein's supervise system to run system services like the mail daemons
The logs get written to a series of files whose names are dates
The current log file is always in current
When a log file is large enough, it is renamed and a new current is begun
For the email logs, this happens every 24 hours or so
tail -f current wil stop after 24 hours
ftail current will notice when current is renamed, and start scanning the new file
It runs forever
