Why Share File Pointers?

• Because otherwise this wouldn't work:

        #!/bin/sh
        echo "I like pie.";
        echo "Especially blackberry.";

• Suppose you did

        ./pie > piefile

• The shell creates piefile and attaches stdout to it

• Then it forks and the child execs echo:
